COSMOS Standard
COSMOS Certification is a global standard for cosmetics that guarantees beauty and skincare products meet stringent criteria for organic practices, covering all aspects of the sourcing, manufacture, marketing and control of cosmetic products. Products are signified by COSMOS ORGANIC and COSMOS NATURAL labels, and raw materials are certified as COSMOS CERTIFIED or COSMOS APPROVED.
COSMOS Standard Process
The COSMOS-standard sets the criteria for brands and companies to meet in order to ensure the products are genuinely organic or of natural origin, produced to the highest possible sustainable practices.
For manufacturers and suppliers, achieving COSMOS Certification involves collaboration with authorized Certification Bodies. These international bodies, operating across continents, conduct thorough audits, including site visits, to assess compliance with COSMOS standards. A COSMOS license fee, applied universally, contributes to maintaining the integrity of the certification.
The COSMOS-standard adheres to four fundamental principles:
- Encouraging the utilization of products from organic agriculture and valuing biodiversity.
- Responsibly employing natural resources while respecting the environment.
- Utilizing processing and manufacturing methods that prioritize cleanliness and considerate treatment of human health and the environment.
- Embracing and advancing the concept of green chemistry.
Certification Labels
COSMOS extends its certification to raw materials through two distinct signatures. COSMOS CERTIFIED is assigned to raw materials with organic content, while COSMOS APPROVED is for those without organic content. Positioned beneath the certifier’s logo, these signatures emphasize transparency and credibility.
COSMOS offers two key signatures for cosmetic products: COSMOS ORGANIC and COSMOS NATURAL. COSMOS ORGANIC signifies products with a high percentage of organic ingredients, while COSMOS NATURAL indicates products with natural ingredients that meet COSMOS standards.
