FI-NATURA
FI-Natura is a non-profit association that provides certification for Finnish natural cosmetics. This certification ensures that products meet rigorous standards, offering consumers a reliable way to identify genuine Finnish natural cosmetics and avoid misleading “green-washed” products.
Certification Criteria
FI-NATURA certification sets clear guidelines on what materials are permitted and prohibited. Here’s a summary of the key criteria:
Permitted Ingredients: Natural or naturally derived materials must make up at least 95% of the product. A limited amount (up to 5%) of synthetic raw materials is allowed if natural sourcing is not feasible. Approved synthetic materials include benzoic acid, sorbic acid, and benzyl alcohol.
Prohibited Ingredients: The certification prohibits the use of petrochemical products, ethoxylated compounds, synthetic fragrances and dyes, silicone compounds, most synthetic preservatives (like parabens and phenoxyethanol), and raw materials of animal origin except for beeswax, honey, milk, and lanolin. Genetically engineered materials are also banned.
Packaging: Products should use environmentally friendly and recyclable packaging materials. PVC and polystyrene (PS) are not allowed due to their environmental impact.
Animal Testing: FI-NATURA strictly forbids animal testing of both products and raw materials, ensuring that all certified items adhere to humane practices.
The certification aims to combat greenwashing—a deceptive practice where synthetic and non-organic products are marketed as natural. By providing a clear and consistent set of criteria, FI-Natura helps consumers distinguish genuine natural cosmetics from misleadingly marketed alternatives. Moreover, it underscores the authenticity of Finnish natural products and supports local industry.
FI-Natura is a trusted mark for consumers seeking genuine Finnish natural cosmetics and a commitment to ethical, transparent practices in the beauty industry.
